Children's Ministry at LSM

Children are welcome at all acts of worship and are valued members of the LSM community. The emphasis on engaging with the sacred through colour, symbol, music and liturgical action, and through beauty and majesty, have much to offer children of any age.

Dedicated ministry to, with, and from the children takes various forms. On Sundays, at High Mass (10:30), a Children's Group (age 5-12+) meets for a children's ministry of the word in the Parish Room, between the Collect and the Peace. We place a high emphasis on nurturing children's spiritual life (rather than merely religious knowledge) through story, play and prayerful reflection. We have a superb range of hand crafted Godly Play materials for exploring Old and New Testament stories, parables and liturgical acts.

Children aged 0–4 are invited to Nursery Church at Emmanuel United Reformed Church next door, either between the Collect and Peace, or until the end of the LSM High Mass, at their parents' discretion. (Children returning to their parents at the Peace may wish to receive a blessing). Nursery Church also recognises children's earliest spiritual needs to worship through song, prayer and patterning of time together, as well as providing a safe place to play or rest.

In main services of worship, children regularly serve as acolytes or boatboys/girls (assisting the thurifer). Older children occasionally read the first lesson.

Children and their families are encouraged to sit towards the front of the Church to make the most of the visual and physical language of the worship at LSM. The Lady Chapel (towards the front, on the right) can provide a place to retreat (and a degree of soundproofing!) if necessary.

There are opportunities for children over the age of 5 to sing in the Junior Choir (7+) or the Pre-Junior Choir (5–7). As well as providing the opportunity for children to develop their musical skills, the choirs are also a good social outlet, with regular outings and events taking place.

Children at LSM are welcome to receive Communion if this has been their practice elsewhere, or they may undertake simple preparation for this with the Vicar when they express a desire so to do. Each year there are also opportunities for older children to prepare for Confirmation.

Children at LSM have developed a mission link with children in Calcutta and enjoy exchanging correspondence, as well as fundraising activities.

Special services for children take place on Christmas Eve with a candlelit liturgy with children's orchestra and crib, and on Good Friday with a Stations of the Cross liturgy, both followed by food!
