Weekly Charity Lunch

There is a Charity Lunch in the Parish Room on most Fridays. There are occasional exceptions when Friday clashes with a major festival, for instance Good Friday. There is a minimum charge of £2 for the lunch, which consists of home-made soup, bread, cheese and fruit. It takes place after the 12:30 Friday Low Mass; however some people go to Mass and not the lunch, whilst others have lunch but don't go to Mass. Usually between a dozen and twenty attend, and it is a pleasant informal social occasion.

The charity supported changes every other month. Usually there is an alternation between a home and overseas charity. Sometimes someone comes from the charity being supported to say a few words about it.

There is always a need for people to volunteer to prepare lunch. This involves producing soup (about 5 pints/2 litres), providing two sorts of cheese (a hard and a soft) and some seasonal fruit. The emphasis is on the simple and straightforward, and there is no need to produce anything difficult or elaborate. Volunteers can certainly claim for the cost of the ingredients if they wish. It is helpful if there is a vegetarian option for the soup if a meat content is envisaged (e.g. a meat stock). Butter and margarine is usually available in the fridge in the kitchen, but it is as well to check. If you are providing lunch be there about 12:15 to get things ready. There is usually a supply of washers-up to help with the things which won't go in the church dish washer.
